Natural and human-induced drivers of groundwater depletion in Wadi Zabid, Tihama coastal plain, Yemen

چکیده

Groundwater depletion is a problem in many parts the world. We developed an approach to investigate drivers of groundwater data-scarce regions. The combines natural and human-induced drivers, with latter focusing on link between human activities government policies. tested Wadi Zabid, Yemen. Forty years rainfall-runoff data were analyzed, alongside changes land cover, abstraction related No decrease rainfall was observed, but runoff did slightly. Significant expansion agricultural lands led increased demand for irrigation water, which provided by drilling wells building water harvesting/diversion structures. In activities, stimulated policy measures, main (water table here fell 1 m/yr average over 1972–2016). conclude that combining factors indeed valuable investigating drivers.

natural and human-induced impacts on coastal groundwater

groundwater is the main source of potable water in most areas of mazandaran province, like sari and babol city. thus the safety of groundwater supplies is very important in these regions. unfortunately attention to groundwater quality has remained limited in iran. in recent years, the growth of industry, technology, population, and water use has increased the stress upon both land and water res...

Groundwater and microbial processes of Alabama coastal plain aquifers

[1] We integrate groundwater geochemistry, microbiology, and numerical modeling techniques to study the origin of elevated salinity and chemical evolution of groundwaters in the coastal plain aquifers of Alabama. Our field data indicate that chemical composition of groundwater evolves by various geochemical and microbial processes as it moves deeper into the subsurface. Sequential peaks of Ca, ...

Nitrate Contamination of Groundwater under Irrigated Coastal Plain Soils

To develop best management practices (BMP) for agricultural land to protect groundwater, data is needed on the leaching of N from irrigated coastal plain soils treated with poultry manure. This study was conducted to determine the vertical and seasonal patterns of NO3 leaching under such soils. Four commercially farmed corn (Zea mays L.) fields were studied, two receiving only fertilizer N (240...

DInSAR-Based Detection of Land Subsidence and Correlation with Groundwater Depletion in Konya Plain, Turkey

In areas where groundwater overexploitation occurs, land subsidence triggered by aquifer compaction is observed, resulting in high socio-economic impacts for the affected communities. In this paper, we focus on the Konya region, one of the leading economic centers in the agricultural and industrial sectors in Turkey. We present a multi-source data approach aimed at investigating the complex and...

Effects of natural and human-induced hypoxia on coastal benthos

Coastal hypoxia (defined here as <1.42 ml L−1; 62.5μM; 2 mg L−1, approx. 30% oxygen saturation) develops seasonally in many estuaries, fjords, and along open coasts as a result of natural upwelling or from anthropogenic eutrophication induced by riverine nutrient inputs. Permanent hypoxia occurs naturally in some isolated seas and marine basins as well as in open slope oxygen minimum zones. Res...
